The Morality of Informality: Exploring binary oppositions in counterfeit markets

In seeking to explain the persistence of informal economy – defined as set economic activities that are illegal yet legitimate some large groups scholars often focus on instrumental factors; in doing so, role morality is overlooked. response, we conduct a qualitative study Pakistani counterfeit bazaars, understand how market participants construct moral legitimacy way justifies participation in, and thus contributes sustaining, economy. We reveal terms ‘counterfeit’ (representing economy) ‘authentic’ formal function an oppositional pair, both within emic perspective but also baseline etic Western Intellectual Property regimes. Compared with this baseline, find engage three types semantic transformation (invalidation, reframing inversion) shape assessments authentic consumption.
